My America series 2010
This ongoing investigation in to suburban America is a look back at my own personal memories of growing up in Southern California. Digital photographs and paintings investigate my own past, and use the archetypes of this traditional American landscape. This place is every place, it is generic space. It is a supposed comfort but also a loneliness and isolation. I am questioning the still-sought after American Dream, and why these limited images are still given as the express train to happiness. Artist Mike Mills refers to the mainstream like an ex girlfriend who crushed his heart. And like him, I'm still in love with her and hate her at the same time. It is where I come from, but also want to know, is this what happiness looks like?
